Democratic Socialists of America
Greater Detroit Local
People Before Profits
We believe that everyone has a right to . . .
- Affordable quality health care, quality education, food and
shelter, and childcare;
- A full-time job at a living wage;
- Living-level disability and retirement income (Social
Security);
- Meaningful participation in public affairs and politics;
- Meaningful participation in workplace decisions; and
- A healthy, clean environment
. . . regardless of income, education, gender, race, or sexual
orientation.
We believe in true democracy, in which people, not
corporations or
political elites, determine public policy and are the primary
consideration in such policy, in which all people have equal
input into local, state, and national government -- in which all
people are the government.
We believe in an economics, a politics, and a culture that
promote
equal participation and working together toward the good of all
rather than elitism and cutthroat "me-first" competition.
This is democratic socialism
DSA is an activist organization, not a
political party. From
promoting single-payer health care, to combating Congress' war on the
poor, to proposing democratic alternatives to the power of the
transnational corporations, DSA is in the center of struggles to
advance a progressive America. This struggle is carried on not only
by prominent leaders, but more importantly, through the work of
thousands of DSA members across the country.
Since 1982, DSA has been working for progressive change. As a
national organization, DSA joins with its allies in Congress'
Progressive Caucus and in many other progressive organizations,
fighting for the interests of the average citizen both in legislative
struggles and in other campaigns to educate the public on progressive
issues and to secure progressive access to the media.
As activists in DSA locals and student chapters from Boston to
San
Diego, our members take part in local and state campaigns for
economic, political, and social justice, while also supporting DSA's
national efforts.
(The text above is based on a recent flyer from the
national
office of DSA.)
The Greater Detroit Local of DSA works
throughout Southeast Michigan
to advance the ideals of democratic socialism. We are involved in a
number of coalition-building projects
that you might be interested in joining. We also hold bi-monthly meetings
to which you are cordially
invited.
